110131 dance mastermind behind SM artists

She has said "Hello" with SHINee. She has talked with Kangta over his "Love Frequency." With Super Junior, she has had "No Other." She has taught SNSD how to be a "Genie." She has shown f(x) the "Nu ABO" blood type. She has been "Dangerous" with BoA. And she has been with DBSK's Yunho and Changmin to "Maximum" heights for their new song "Keep Your Head Down." So, who is she to have met and worked with so many famous K-pop artists?

She is Rino Nakasone, the internationally known dancer and choreographer! Rino Nakasone is known not only for participating in music videos and concerts of megastars Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Marques Houston, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, and Justin Bieber, but also for winning second place in the show America's Best Dance Crew! But her best known work? Being the dancing mastermind in the K-Pop world that brings you not only all of those dance choreographies listed earlier, but also many other choreographies for SM Entertainment artists as well as one of their main choreographers!

As a special guest performer for the DREAM ON! K-Pop Shibuya Dance Festival, Rino Nakasone recently visited her birthplace, Japan. During her stay in Japan, Rino visted family in Okinawa, stayed in Tokyo to give a couple workshops in dance and also took some time with Fangirldiaries to give an interview.

Of course the fans love all your work, but if you had to pick just one from all your K-Pop projects, which one would be your favorite choreography to date and why?

"Love Like Oxygen" by
SHINee. When I first heard the song, I loved it so much because it had so much of a Michael Jackson flavor. So I couldn’t help but make a choreography that had so much MJ influence, which I love.

The Beat Freakz have always been very vocal about encouraging girls to dance – how does it feel to see so many girls learning and performing your choreographies, like at “DREAM ON!?” Why do you think they appeal so much to girls, some who might not have been interested in dancing beforehand?

It’s an honor because that’s how I practice dance, watching all the idols and their choreography. I think K-Pop has a lot of elements of how entertainment used to be back in the day, with MJ, Janet Jackson, TLC and MC Hammer. They made us wanna do what they did because it’s so attractive. My opinion of why Girls’ Generation is so popular in Japan is not only [because] there were no other artists like them, but also [because] they are role models of what the Japanese girls wanna be. Also, Girls’ Generation entertains with great music and catchy choreography.

We’re curious about the process and work that goes into choreographing; for example with a group like SHINee, who you’ve worked closely with since debut, do you keep in mind the members’ individual strengths and weaknesses, or do you focus on creating a visual expression for the song itself?

I always consider each artist’s style and strengths, but mainly I just listen to the songs – I want to make the music come alive through choreography.

You’re holding a series of workshops here in Tokyo during your visit, and one of the dances you’ll be teaching is for DBSK’s "Why (Keep Your Head Down)" – easily one of the most anticipated comebacks of the year. How would you describe your experience working on this particular choreography?

The choreography for "Why" was actually a collaboration with three other Korean choreographers (BeatBurger), and I enjoyed working with them. I think when collaborating there are a lot of unknown possibilities as to how the work will come out, and I love that.

You’ve given dance workshops in LA/US and now in Japan. Do you have any plans on visiting any other countries to give workshops? And do you have any tips for those who are unable to attend workshops but still want to learn the choreographies?

I would love to teach in as many countries as possible, just bring me out there! And whoever can’t learn from me, just keep watching the footage and try your best. Pay attention to the details! Also study all the different artists because even when they’re doing same choreography, they all have their own distinct styles you can learn from.

What would be your craziest dream K-Pop project — for example, maybe you would want to collaborate and perform with ANY K-Pop artist on a non-K-Pop song, or maybe you would even like a huge mash-up collab with the Beat Freakz — what would it be and why? Anything under the K-Pop sun — the sky’s the limit!!!

My dream is to perform with
SHINee! It would be great if we could do it with the Beat Freaks; it could be their songs or just [a] straight-up dance performance! Who knows, it could be me singing with SHINee too~!

Also I want do project with Girls’ Generation and Beat Freaks; since we’re both 9-member, all-women groups it would be funny to switch roles, and maybe do some skits.

With The GEMINIZ, the duo I perform in with Maryss from Paris, I would like to do a project with DBSK [Yunho and Changmin].

Oh, and with BoA, I would love to just dance our asses off with the Beat Freaks and perform a concert or MV – to show girl power, and women who can dance better than men!

What more can we expect to see from you in K-Pop 2011? Both SHINee and SNSD are working in Japan this year; are there any chances of seeing more of your work here?

I don’t know for now. but I am always there when they need me! I love them!

So, for all those K-Pop fans out there who have wondered who it is behind all of these amazing dances, Rino Nakasone is the genius behind it all. Hopefully in the many years coming Rino will continue to bring us K-Pop fans more exciting and fun choreography.

310111 SHINee’s Onew sheds tears during SBS’s “Battle of Star Couples”(300111)

SHINee’s Onew shed tears during a SBS New Year’s special broadcast.
During SBS New Year’s special program, ‘Battle of Star Couples,’ Onew suddenly showed tears while participating in the third round of a corner called ‘Bolbulok (Chance) Eating Table.’
This corner involved star couples randomly choosing different kinds of foods and finding out their new year’s fortunes through it. The rules of the game in this corner asks for the couple to choose two food dishes; if they choose a normal food out of the two dishes, they win, but if they do not, they will be punished by being forced to eat a food that is hard to endure.
Onew was nicknamed ‘Endurance Onew’ for nonchalantly eating dishes that were hard to eat. Furthermore, Onew started shedding tears while eating rice cakes and caused everyone to be confused over whether or not he acted out the tears or actually ate very spicy rice cakes.
On this day, it was said that not only Onew, but all the idol guests showed incredible acting skills to the point where even the MCs who already knew the answers became confused.
Meanwhile, the truth behind endurance Onew’s tears can be found out through viewing ‘Battle of Star Couples’ on February 3rd.

[SPOILER] SHINee’s Onew tackles f(x)’s Luna

On January 23rd, many idol groups came together for the recording of
MBC’s Lunar New Year’s special, “Idol Star Athletics Championship“.
During the event, fans caught a hilarious – but almost dangerous – incident between
SHINee’s Onew and f(x)’s Luna. In the video, Luna and SHINee’s Minho
are celebrating after Luna succeeds in clearing the high jump. As they’re jumping for joy,
Onew comes running in to congratulate her and decides that he’s going
to run right through the pole.
He ends up tripping over the mat and dives straight into Luna, who reprimands
him playfully with a pat. Luckily, no one got hurt and it seems like they both got
a good laugh out of the situation.
Check out the epic video below!

Because of their masculine image, they are known as beastly idols.Heartbeat is an immensely popular song in Korea. Very fit members also danced a very unique dance for the song. The song’s lyrics describe the pain and helplessness felt by a man after a breakup. On the day that 2PM debuted in Japan, their showcase was attended by 25,000 people. They showed off fresh charisma and a perfect dance made possible by lots of practice.

Beast will officially debut in Japan on the 23rd of March. The six member group who debuted in Korea in 2009 have explosive dance moves. Intense rhythms are a special feature of their songs. Although they are only youngsters of 19 to 21 years old, they have successfully released many songs and dances. After only debuting in Korea for half a year, their song Shock shot to first place on the charts. Each of the six members have their own specialty, but their premise is built by all the members’ ability to dance. Their popularity has been enhanced due to the earlier debut of 3 members.Last year in November, Beast held their first solo showcase in Tokyo’s Big Site.

On that day, fans arranged themselves at the entrance of the venue to form the word BEAST to welcome the members. This spring, Beast will start official activities in Japan. On the other hand, there is Shinee.

Shinee who debuted in Korea in 2008 are gaining explosive popularity. They are well known for their outstanding vocals and self-choreographed dances.Be it fast-paced dance songs or beautiful ballads, they are always excellent performers. Their image is also easily accepted by Japanese people. Most Korean boy groups consist of pretty boys who are good at singing and dancing, Japanese fans love this kind of image.Shinee also held their first solo showcase with grandeur in Japan during the end of last year, with an audience consisting of mostly female fans in their teens and twenties.

They are said to officially debut in Japan this spring. The Hallyu wave in Japan was started by TVXQ. They broke the barriers between Jpop and Kpop, making more people gain an interest towards Korean music. In addition, with girl groups coming into fashion in Japan, a whole new level of fans have been formed. With this momentum, let us welcome the peak of idol boy groups. As to how this phenomena will affect Japan’s music scene, we can only wait and see.
